Original architect of CompStat, Stop and Frisk, and Broken Windows policing calls Cruz’s plan absurd
“The statements he made today is why he’s not gonna become the president of this country”
As first reported by Capital New York, Bratton made the statement during a joint press conference with Mayor Bill de Blasio, who has endorsed Hillary Clinton for president and has additionally made strong statements against the bigotry of Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, in particular with regards to the GOP front runner’s rhetoric towards immigrants and Muslim-Americans.
“I would remind the senator that he lives in the United States of America, and the statements he made today is why he’s not gonna become the president of this country,” Bratton said alongside de Blasio.
In a statement released from his Facebook page, Cruz aggressively criticized European nations for allowing migrants into their countries, saying “Our European allies are now seeing what becomes of a toxic mix of migrants who have been infiltrated by terrorists and isolated, radical Muslim neighborhoods.” He then proceeded to make the inflammatory – and almost certainly unconstitutional – call for law enforcement to patrol and single out Muslim neighborhoods for extra attention.
“We need to empower law enforcement to patrol and secure Muslim neighborhoods before they become radicalized.”
Bratton and de Blasio each took turns at the conference criticizing Cruz, who in addition to his statement following the Brussels Attacks criticized de Blasio through a spokesperson specifically for “succumbing to unfounded criticism and eliminating the efforts of law enforcement to work with Muslim communities to stop radical Islamic terrorism.
“I just have to say it’s reprehensible,” said de Blasio noting the over 900 Muslim-American officers in NYPD, “His comments are not about safety and security. It’s demagoguery. There are peace-loving, law-abiding Muslim Americans in neighborhoods all over New York City who should be respected like all other members of our community.”
Bratton continued the attack by saying, “We don’t need a president that doesn’t respect the values the form the foundation of this country. I have over 900 very dedicated (Muslim-American) officers in this department, many of whom do double duty, and they serve as active duty members of the U.S. Military in combat, something the senator has never seen,” a direct reference to Cruz’s lack of military experience.
While Injustice.in is undoubtedly against all forms of bigotry, and stands in clear solidarity with de Blasio and Commissioner Bratton’s against Islamophobic intolerance, it is interesting to hear these statements coming from the principal designer and proponent of Stop and Frisk and Broken Windows policing tactics, both of which relied heavily on racial profiling in maximizing its effectiveness.
Nonetheless, we momentarily applaud both New York City officials for swiftly rejecting these reprehensible claims from a leading presidential candidate.
