NYPD sources have reported that a 25-year old transgender woman was raped late last Saturday night at New York City’s Stonewall Inn, the bar famous as the setting for the Stonewall riots in 1969 which are widely-considered to make the beginning of the modern gay rights movement.
According to reports, around 11:40pm on the night of March 26th the victim entered a single-occupancy bathroom at the bar. A man came in the restroom claiming he needed to wash his hands, then proceeded to grope and sexually assault the victim. He is reported to be in his 30s, approximately 5’11”, and near 250 pounds.
According to Gothamist, the accused then fled the scene of the crime. The victim left and then returned to call 911 and file a police report about an hour later, before being taken to Lenox Hill Hospital for her injuries.
Sources have not revealed whether the attack at the Stonewall is being investigated as a hate crime.
