Congress included $45 million in support in yesterday’s omnibus bill after public concern over the nation’s increasing number of untested rape kits. The funding should aid local police forces to combat their astounding numbers of backlogged rape kits. Rape kits cost about $1,000 each to test and, like the upwards of 70,000 found in 1,000 jurisdictions during a USA Today investigation, are often simply left to collect dust while perpetrators remain active. The study encompassed only a small number of police departments–the U.S. has over 18,000. This would indicate there may be hundred of thousands of rape kits left untested.
