Indian Parliament approved a bill on Tuesday to try 16-18 year olds as adults for the most heinous crimes. This comes amid a storm of protest over the release of one of the six men who raped and murdered a 23-year old student on a moving bus in December 2012. Despite this being one of the most gruesome reported rapes the justice system had faced, law required that the 17 year-old convicted in the rape and murder of Jyoti Singh serve the maximum juvenile sentence of only three years. The adult offenders were given death sentences. While the vote will not change the outcome of the 2012 sentencing, it will prevent offenders from early release in the future.
